Style Profile: Old meets new in ‘schoolboy’ style
His love for the past intertwines with his love for thrifting, two traits that were clear when I spotted him at Red Raven Espresso Parlor, where he works.
Sporting a mixture of prints (plaid, polka dots, Aztec), Washburn manages to look refined, unique and a little mysterious.
What are you wearing? My jacket is Topman, my shirt and bolo tie are from a thrift store, my jeans are from PacSun and my shoes are from the Boys Ranch.
Describe your style. Naughty schoolboy – like the guy you see smoking in the bathroom when he’s not supposed to be. I like things buttoned up, and I like a rolled jean.
Why wear a bolo tie? Most are gaudy, but this one is simple. I’m not too into the fanciful ones. I like to wear my shirts buttoned to the top, so ties work well with that.
What’s your favorite brand? Topman. I use designers for inspiration, though. I try not to get too trendy.
Tennis shoes or dress shoes? I really like dress shoes or boots. I take worn leather shoes to Tom’s (a shoe and tarp repair) so I can keep them for forever.
What inspires your style? I really appreciate the old black-and-white French films – the dress shoes, socks, jackets and finely curled hair.
Why do you enjoy thrifting? I like the sustainability and the treasure hunt of it all. It’s the little old grandma in me.
It’s cool to think that what you’re wearing once kept someone else warm or was worth something to someone else.
What are your favorite thrift stores? St. Vincent de Paul, the Boys Ranch downtown and the Now and Then Shoppe.
What trends do you love for fall? I like Aztec print and polka dots.
Is there anything you’ve been looking for recently? I want a bowler hat. I’ve been looking for years.
