Letter: Phil Hansen qualified for Senate

A letter to the editor on Sept. 23 caught our attention – mostly because it was a foolish and irrelevant attack on Phil Hansen, who is a Minnesota Senate District 4 candidate in Tuesday’s election.

In our free society, an elective office is a privilege as well as a serious responsibility. We are pleased to support Hansen. He has built a positive message about legislative accountability, and job creation, and also about restoring statesmanship to the Minnesota Senate.

Hansen is a fine example of a man who wishes to serve as a citizen legislator ... a concept that originated with our nation’s earliest leaders. He is not a professional politician but rather has had a career in professional football due to his considerable skills, hard work and dedication as an athlete.

Hansen and his wife are each small-business owners in Detroit Lakes, Minn. As a small-business owner, Hansen understands that small businesses are the true job creation engines in our nation.

Hansen gives of his time and talents as a leader of sportsmanship and fitness camps for young people. Hansen is also well-known among area high school football and basketball fans as a referee. Hansen is the father of three school-age children and is dedicated to making education a high priority of his Senate service.

Hansen is eminently qualified to be a state senator representing the people of District 4. He is eager to serve his constituents. He is always open to respectful conversation.

The writers live in Hawley, Minn.
