Central Cass sweeps Kindred for District 2 volleyball title

FARGO – The District 2 tournament has been a sore spot for the Central Cass volleyball team of late.

The Squirrels hadn’t won the tournament in three years, but that drought ended on Monday.

No. 1-seeded Central Cass cruised to a 25-20, 25-23, 25-16 victory over No. 3-seed Kindred during the North Dakota Class B, District 2 championship match at Fargo Oak Grove High School.

Next up is the Region 1 tournament Nov.5-8 at Oakes High School.

Monday, the Squirrels used their size to execute an effective blocking scheme and a productive offense.

“Size is definitely our advantage,” Central Cass head coach Bridget Stowers said. “We have three girls over 6 feet tall and it is hard for teams to adjust to. They are not used to playing against it.”

Faith Dooley, a 6-foot-3 junior, led the way with 13 kills and two blocks. Senior Hannah Breske had five kills and two blocks.

“We wanted to come out strong and get this win,” Dooley said.

Though the Central Cass blocking was highly successful at disrupting the Vikings’ offensive chances, Kindred head coach Brooks Dockter said the Squirrels’ back row was equally impressive.

“They blocked well,” Dockter said. “We knew they were going to get blocks on us, but the difference was their back row defended incredibly well around their blockers. We didn’t expect them to dig as well as they did.”

Rachel Weiland had 10 digs for the defending Class B state champion Squirrels.

Kellie Schmit paced the Vikings with 14 kills, four blocks and two aces. Alexandra Erickson added 7 kills and a block for Kindred.

Central Cass moves onto the Region 1 tournament, which it has won the last two seasons.

“We got to keep our heads in check,” Stowers said. “It is not over yet. There is a lot of volleyball to go. We got to maintain our aggressiveness on the court, don’t hesitate and go for every ball.”

Jenna Zaeske added nine kills and six aces for the Grovers.

“We are in the region tournament now, so it takes the pressure off a little,” Oak Grove head coach Denny Stinar said. “The girls had a good comeback after a disappointing match on Friday. We thought that was by far our worst match of the year.

“We were able to spread it around and get all the girls involved.”

Megan Johnson had six kills and two blocks to lead Enderlin.
