Letter: Heitkamp great choice for SenateI attended my first-ever political rally and came home energized by the potential of North Dakota electing its first woman to the U.S. Senate. Heidi Heitkamp is a woman with a positive attitude, exceptional intelligence and a dedication to doing what is best for North Dakotans. She is an independent thinker, and despite what her opponent claims, she will not strictly adhere to her party’s agenda if it’s not in the best interest of the people she represents.
I find it ironic that her opponent – who has a verifiable voting record that is in lockstep with his party’s leaders – would accuse Heitkamp of being a puppet of the Democratic Party. Who signed Grover Norquist’s tax pledge? Rick Berg did. (To his credit, John Hoeven did not.)
Although North Dakota tends to be a “red” state, we had two highly respected senators in Kent Conrad and Byron Dorgan, who voted based on their conscience and for the betterment of North Dakota. I would hope that all voters would take a close look at Heitkamp because I believe she’s cut from the same cloth as those gentlemen.
