Spuds roll to playoff win over Alexandria

MOORHEAD – The only safe place to avoid the cold and snow Saturday night at Jim Gotta Stadium would have been to warm up by Chase Moorlock’s cleats. Have fun trying to catch the Moorhead running back.

Morlock ran around, above and through any Alexandria defender Saturday, racking up 312 yards on 10 carries and four touchdowns in the Class 5A, Section 8 semifinal to lead the Spuds to a 48-14 win over the Cardinals to lock up a spot in the section championship Friday at St. Johns University.

“We gave him the week off last week because he needed to get healthy and he needed to get his speed back,” Moorhead coach Kevin Feeney said. “In conditions like this, it was huge to kill a team like that with big-play ability. It was a total team effort, but No. 25 is pretty special. If he’s not at 100 percent then it’s going to get scary in the next coming weeks.”

Alexandria recovered a fumble on a punt at the Moorhead (9-0) 14-yard line and opened up the scoring five plays later with a one-yard touchdown run from Jake Bear early in the first quarter. Moorhead answered with 41 points. The Spuds marched 65 yards on the ensuing drive, capping it with a Morlock six-yard touchdown run with 4 minutes, 39 seconds left in the first to tie things up.

Alexandria (2-8) punted on its next drive and the Morlock show began. Morlock found the end zone from 68 yards out to make it 14-7 early in the second and scored from 62 yards out late in the second to give the Spuds a 21-7 lead at half, with Morlock racking up 232 yards in the first half.

“There’s something about playoff football that gets us going,” Morlock said. “We all clicked tonight. My offensive line had everything open and I just took the holes I was given. I’m definitely healthy and ready to go.”

Morlock opened up the second half with an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage to make it 28-7. The Spuds capped its next drive with a 43-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Lien to Brett Lawrence late in the third and its next drive with a one-yard touchdown run for Drew Gotta early in the fourth to make it 34-7 and the route was on.

Alexandria made it 41-14 with a one-yard touchdown plunge from Landon Anderson and Ben Lien added a 62-yard touchdown run for Moorhead late in the fourth to cap the scoring.

“Next up is the section championship, so we got to go to work and get to practice,” Morlock said.
