Beulah defeats Wahpeton in Class 2A state football playoffsBEULAH – Time of possession?
Beulah’s five scoring drives consumed a total of just 10 minutes, 37 seconds as the Miners downed Wahpeton 36-21 on Saturday in the North Dakota Class 2A football playoffs.
Wahpeton entered the quarterfinal game ranked third in the state. The Huskies’ season ended at 7-3.
Third-rated Beulah advances to next weekend’s semifinal round, meeting Fargo Shanley in Fargo. The Deacons are ranked No. 2 in 2A.
Beulah’s offense sputtered a bit in the early going as Wahpeton jumped to a 21-6 lead. Once Miners quarterback Trevor Zacher got the passing game going, however, it was another matter.
The Miners scored the final four touchdowns of the game, three of them through the air.
It didn’t seem the weather was conducive to a passing offense. Game-time temperature was 31 degrees with two-plus inches of snow on the ground and persistent flurries.
Zacher threw for 45 yards in the first half, 122 after intermission.
“(Zacher) told me it wasn’t the ball. He said, ‘I’m not throwing well. I’ll fix it,’ and off he went,” Beulah head coach Jim Dooley said.
The weather had nothing to do with Beulah’s game plan, according to Zacher.
“We were going to pass either way,” he said. “In bad conditions the offense knows where it’s going and the defense can’t cut as well.”
