Duo driving force behind Lisbon's championship hopesLISBON, N.D. – The Lisbon boys cross country team has benefited from a one-two punch at the top of its lineup this fall.
Junior Thomas Horgeshimer and senior Jacob Gallagher have been ranked in the North Dakota Class B individual poll the entire season.
“Those two runners have been our big guns all season,” Lisbon head coach Joe Kern said. “They have set the tone for us as a team.”
Horgeshimer and Gallagher finished first and second, respectively, at last Saturday’s East Region meet in Cooperstown. Those finishes helped Lisbon win the East Region team title.
“We felt really good about the East Region meet,” Kern said. “That is setting things up nicely for us. We feel really good heading into the state meet.”
The Class B boys state meet is set for 1 p.m. CDT Saturday at Heart River Golf Course in Dickinson, N.D.
Horgeshimer raced to a time of 16 minutes, 57 seconds on Saturday and Gallagher checked in at 17:31.
“Both (Thomas and Jacob) will be competing for an individual state championship for themselves and help our team compete for state championship,” Kern said.
Lisbon is ranked No. 2 in the latest team poll behind New Town, which has three runners ranked in the top 10.
Kieran Hall, Justin Warling and Zach Hanson round our Lisbon’s top five.
“We feel it is somewhat of a longshot for us,” Kern said. “We are definitely not counting ourselves out. We will be going out to Dickinson on Saturday with the intentions to try and win a state championship. We know it is going to be tough. We will have to have our best races out of not just Thomas and Jacob, but our other top three scoring runners.”
