ND’s only commercial brewery opens in Bismarck

BISMARCK – North Dakota is no longer the only state in the union without a commercial craft brewery.

Edwinton Brewing Co. officially opened Thursday night with a special beer launch event at Bismarck’s Peacock Alley Bar & Grill.

President and brewmaster Paul Nelson says the brewery was more than three years in the making, and as a result, the opening generated substantial buzz around the Bismarck area.

“People are happy to have something local – I know the bars and restaurants love that option,” he says.

The brewery’s first beer was the Lou Belgian IPA, and Nelson says there are plans to release different styles in the future.

Edwinton Brewing Co. is not the first North Dakota brewery, as several have come before it and failed. But Nelson hopes that his brewery is the start of something new in the state.

“I think people are excited about it. North Dakota’s been a little bit behind the curve,” he says.
