Prairie Winds Veterinary Center opens in south Fargo

FARGO – Alicia Wisnewski entered veterinary school with the idea she would one day own her own clinic.

After working with renowned experts in the fields of equine and small-animal medicine, Wisnewski kept her promise to herself, opening Prairie Winds Veterinary Center this week.

The clinic at 5370 51st Ave. S. in Fargo will focus on dogs, cats and horses.

The facility has recovery rooms, a quarantine area, three exam rooms, a surgical center and space for an equine bay.

Office manager Dori Torkildson said until the equine bay is finished, Wisnewski will care for equines mainly through farm visits.

House calls for dogs and cats are also available.

“The horses and the house calls were a needed service in the Fargo-Moorhead area,” Wisnewski said. “We’re the only clinic in town that does horses, and we’re the only clinic that does house calls (for dogs and cats).”

Prairie Winds Veterinary Center will employ three veterinary technicians and one assistant. Local veterinary students also intern at the clinic.

Wisnewski graduated from North Dakota State University before receiving a doctorate of veterinary medicine from Iowa State University. She spent nine years at the Casselton (N.D.) Veterinary Service, followed by three years as a resident veterinarian and instructor at the Minnesota School of Business Veterinary Technology.

Wisnewski said she will continue to teach the school’s veterinary medical math class.

Moorhead resident Gloria Weisgram heard about Wisnewski while shopping at a pet store.

“(Wisnewski) is so personable, and you can tell right away how much she loves dogs,” Weisgram said.

Weisgram said bringing her two dogs, a 10-year-old German shepherd and a younger mixed breed, is worth the trip to south Fargo.

Prairie Winds Veterinary Center began celebrating its opening this week with an open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Saturday. Saturday will be Family Day with activities for children and a pet costume contest.
