Fargo North sweeps West Fargo in EDC volleyball
The Spartans dug out of deep deficits in the second and third sets to post a 25-16, 26-24, 25-22 sweep of West Fargo in Eastern Dakota Conference volleyball.
North started the second set down 7-0 and trailed 8-1 to begin the third set. In each of those sets, the Spartans rallied back with strong hitting and precision serving.
“We showed a lot of character,” Fargo North head coach Jerry Daily said. “Usually when you get down that big in one set it is hard to come back, but when you do it in two sets it is impressive.
“We made a lot of great defensive plays, got it set up and hit the ball really well.”
Senior middle hitter and NCAA Division I Nebraska volleyball commit Kira Larson led the way for North with 10 kills and six blocks.
Emma Bergeron and Destinee Thorstensen each added six kills for the Spartans (26-4 overall, 10-3 EDC).
“It says a lot for a team to come back by that much,” said Larson, who also had three ace serves. “It really shows how much we have improved. Honestly, earlier on this season I do not think we could have done that.”
North has now won eight of its last nine matches.
The Spartans finished with 10 ace serves, which kept West Fargo from setting up its offense during critical times of the match.
“They serve aggressively,” West Fargo head coach Paula Pierson said. “They can serve top spin, they can serve float deep and float short. We just couldn’t react to it. Serve receive was the hardest part of the match for us.”
Senior middle blocker Christina Bruenjes totaled seven kills and three blocks for West Fargo (16-12, 9-5 EDC).
Senior setter and North Dakota State softball commit Courtney Johnson tallied 15 assists, three kills and an ace serve for North.
“We have a bunch of seniors on this team,” Larson said. “We are starting to realize we don’t have a lot of time left. We are starting to get things done. Every point matters, every match matters … We are ready to take care of business.”
North improved to 2-0 against the Packers this fall. The Spartans won the first meeting in five sets.
Though North had to dig out of two big holes, Tuesday’s match wasn’t the nail biter the first one turned out to be.
“The first time we played West Fargo, they had the match,” Daily said. “They did everything, but win it in the end. Any time you sweep a team of their quality it is nice.”
