Moorhead boys reach Class 2A, Section 8 championship game in soccer

MOORHEAD – Jacob Olson hasn’t seen much playing time at forward this season for Moorhead, but when he got his chance on Saturday, he made the most of it.

Olson scored his first two goals of the season to spark the Spuds to a 7-0 victory over St. Cloud Tech in a Minnesota Class 2A, Section 8 boys soccer semifinal game at Horizon Middle School.

“It feels great. It’s a good time to get those two goals,” Olson said. “We came out strong, kept the pressure up, got a couple goals and just went from there.”

Moorhead’s Zachary Holtgrewe started the scoring for the Spuds at the

7 minute, 32 seconds of the first half. Holtgrewe went top shelf over Tigers goalkeeper David Scharenbroich to take a 1-0 lead. Carl Walker was credited with the assist.

Olson tacked on his first goal shortly after, playing a ball across the middle from Adam Baker and sending it to the opposite side of the net for the score.

Walker connected with Olson downfield a few possessions later and after a quick cut back to the middle, Olson fired a shot through Scharenbroich’s outstretched arms to take a 3-0 lead heading into half.

“(Olson has) been playing defense a lot, but I made a defensive change and had the freedom to put him up at right forward,” Spuds head coach Lance Hansen said. “I think the first five minutes we looked a little tentative, a little back on our heels. They put some nice pressure on us at first, but we starting playing the way we normally play and starting clicking. I was happy with that.”

Holtgrewe and Brandon Nguyen found the back of the net in the second half for the Spuds and Jake Leier picked up a game on a corner kick. Walker finished with three assists.

The Spuds advanced to the section championship game on Tuesday against No. 6-seeded Anoka, a team that Hansen is familiar with.

“Last year, we lost to them twice. They knocked us out of the section tournament in the semifinal round,” Hansen said. “This year, we had the first game of the season against them and we won 2-0. We didn’t want to be overconfident going in because we know they are a good team.”

The Anoka Tornadoes battled Elk River on Saturday, earning the 2-1 victory in a shootout to advance to the state championship.
