Grand Forks fire kills two cats, displaces family

GRAND FORKS - A fire at a north Grand Forks home displaced the family that lived there and killed two pet cats on Friday, according to a fire department official.

Firefighters responded to a call of a possible attic fire at 117 Fenton Ave. in the Riverside neighborhood shortly after 3 p.m., according to Battalion Chief Mike Sandry.

No one but the cats were home at the time of the fire.

Firefighters had the flames in the second floor bathroom under control in a matter of minutes, Sandry said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said.

The home did not incur any structural damage but there was major damage to the bathroom walls.

“They’ll probably have to at least replace the sheetrock in that room,” Sandry said.

The second floor of the home received heavy smoke damage while the first floor sustained moderate smoke damage.

The Red Cross is offering food, clothing and shelter to the family, said Mason Hollifield, a volunteer with the organization.
