Firefighters fight two apartment blazes

FARGO – Fire officials are reminding smokers to use caution in discarding cigarettes after crews here fought two separate apartment fires on Friday, both of them likely started by improperly discarded cigarettes and dry conditions according to two news releases.

Fire crews fought a deck fire at 4711 17th Ave. S. around 1:30 p.m. Officials say the fire was burning inside the walls on the third floor and had started in a plastic container in the corner of the balcony.

Two units of the building had light smoke damage and no injuries were reported, according to the release.

Another fire at an apartment at 1620 35th St. S. displaced residents of two units, a news release said.

Crews responded around 2:30 p.m. to the apartment after landscaping brush caught on fire. An investigation determined the fire was unintentional and likely started because of a discarded cigarette, the release said.

A window and siding on the south side of the building were damaged but no injuries were reported.
