Weather Talk: September temperatures finished near average

Through the first 27 days of September, the average temperature in Fargo-Moorhead was running about one degree below normal. But temperatures in the middle 80s the last three days of the month increased the overall average temperature in September by slightly more than one degree.

So in the end, September finished 0.2 degrees above the current 30-year average. The average temperature last month was 59.3 degrees. It was the second straight month that the average monthly temperature finished near average. The coldest temperature was a 25-degree reading on Sept. 23. That was the coldest September morning since 2003.

The 0.12 inches of rain recorded at Hector Internation Airport was the lowest total on record and was 2.45 inches below average for the month. The period from May 1 through Aug. 31 was only the 32nd-driest on record. But with virtually no rain last month, the May through September period ranked as the 14th driest.
