Minot, Grand Forks Red River to compete in today's ND state boys tennis title match

BISMARCK – North Dakota’s two high school boys tennis regional champions will clash for the big prize this morning at Bismarck’s Capital Racquet and Fitness Center.

West Region champion Minot and East Region top seed Grand Forks Red River moved into today’s team state final with quarterfinal and semifinal victories on Thursday.

Minot downed Grand Forks Central 4-1 and Mandan 3-2, while Red River disposed of Bismarck 4-1 and Bismarck Century 5-0.

Minot is in the state final for the first time since 2004. Its last state title came in 1988.

“We ended one drought and hopefully we’ll end another (on Friday),” Minot coach Scott DeLorme said. “We’re a team that is loaded with seniors and it was our goal to make it this far. We had a good day today. It was a total team effort, which was typical of our whole season. Now it’s on to play Red River. They’re very strong and they’ve been the dominant team for a lot of years. But the boys will be ready to give it their best. Any one of them is capable of stepping up and getting a win.”

Red River is seeking its 15th consecutive state title.

“We have a tremendous run going and none of these kids wants to be part of the team that sees it come to an end,” Red River coach Greg LaDouceur said. “They’re determined to keep it going, and it showed today.”

Red River’s only blemish on the day was a three-set loss at No. 2 doubles in the quarterfinals. Bismarck’s Andrew Krecklau and David Keys outlasted Mitch Kuhlman and Daniel Pierce 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Otherwise, the Roughriders posted nine straight-set victories. Eight of those sets ended 6-1. In addition, there were three 6-0 and three 6-2 sets.

“Red River is so good. You really have to be at the top of your game to beat them,” Century coach Scott McPherson said. “We gave it our best shot. I thought we competed well, but it wasn’t enough.”

Minot led Mandan 3-0 after the first three completed matches. A victory by Isaac Massey and Jordin Gardner at No. 1 doubles sealed the deal for the Magicians.

The championship dual is scheduled to start at approximately 9:30 a.m., at CRFC. Today’s action will begin at 8 a.m. with the fifth-place dual between Fargo North and the winner of Thursday’s other consolation semifinal between Bismarck and Fargo Shanley. North stayed alive with a 3-2 victory over Grand Forks Central.

Century and Mandan met for third place late Thursday night. That dual and the Bismarck-Shanley consolation semifinal were still in progress when this edition went to press.

The state tournament was scheduled to be played at four locations (three outdoor) in Bismarck and Mandan, but chilly temperatures on Thursday and unfavorable weather forecasts the remainder of the weekend pushed the entire tournament indoors at CRFC.

The singles and doubles tournaments will begin at approximately 11 a.m. today. Saturday’s action will start at 8 a.m.
