Cable One to air all UND men's hockey home games this season

FARGO – University of North Dakota men’s hockey fans in Fargo won’t get shut out when it comes to television coverage.

CableOne will carry all 20 UND men’s hockey home games – including exhibitions – through the Fox College Sports, CableOne general manager Scott Geston said.

“We knew it was coming. We didn’t have any schedule in hand,” Geston said Tuesday. “Now, I have a schedule.”

Midcontinent Communications – a regional cable provider in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota – acquired the broadcasting rights for UND athletics last July. Midcontinent is available in West Fargo and Moorhead, but not in Fargo where CableOne is the cable provider.

CableOne hasn’t made any arrangements with Midco Sports to air UND sports broadcasts, Geston said. However, because CableOne offers FCS, it will be able to provide UND men’s hockey games to its subscribers.

Previously, UND games were produced by the Fighting Sioux Sports Network (FSSN) in affiliation with WDAZ-TV in Grand Forks.

CableOne had aired the FSSN broadcasts.

Kyle Doperalski, associate athletic director for external operations at UND, said he’s pleased the men’s hockey games will be available in Fargo.

“I think it’s tremendously important with the passionate fans that we have in Fargo,” said Doperalski. “We need that exposure for the fans who can’t attend the game. … This agreement with Fox College Sports allows fans to see the games, not only in Fargo, but around the country as well.”

FCS is Channel 307 on CableOne, Geston said. The channel is part of the digital value package.

“Half of our subscribers will have access to these games,” Geston said.

FCS is scheduled to air UND’s exhibition opener against Manitoba, which is at 7 p.m. Saturday.

“We make them all available to Fox College Sports,” said Mark Powell, the vice president of business solutions for Midcontinent Communications. “It’s their choice to play them or not.”

Powell said Midco Sports Network has 295,000 subscribers and close to an additional 100,000 through affiliates like FCS.

The UND men’s hockey games won’t be on FCS next season when the team joins the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. The NCHC has a contract with CBS College Sports that gives CBS national exclusivity.
