Red River's Anderson wins East Region singles titleGRAND FORKS – Greg LaDouceur knows it’s a toss-up when his top two singles players go against each other.
“It comes down to whoever is on,” the Grand Forks Red River boys tennis coach said.
On Saturday afternoon, it was Joey Anderson.
The Red River junior beat teammate Greg Wischer 6-4, 6-3 to win the East Region singles title at Choice Health and Fitness Center.
“I just played my game,” said Anderson, who teamed with Wischer to win a state doubles title last year. “It was really tough playing him, but it was fun.”
Anderson will take the No. 1 seed from the East Region to the state tournament next week in Bismarck. Wischer, a sophomore who lost for the first time in a high school match since his seventh-grade season, will be seeded second.
“We probably play each other three times a week,” Anderson said. “It’s a coin toss to see who comes out on top.”
Anderson and Wischer split time at the No. 1 position this season for the Roughriders, who won the East Region team title on Thursday.
Red River’s Andrew Godon also qualified for state in singles, finishing seventh.
In the doubles draw, Red River’s Andre Caoili and Jake Kuhlman won back-to-back three-set matches to earn the No. 1 seed for the state tournament.
Caoili and Kuhlman beat Grand Forks Central’s Brendan Sailer and Kyle Folson 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinals, then topped Fargo Shanley’s Dylan Alderman and Patrick Strom 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 in the finals.
“They had a real tough fight,” LaDouceur said. “They played well in spurts. There were some times when I think they probably took the wrong choice of shots, but they picked it up when they needed to. I’m proud of them. They beat a very good team from Shanley.”
Sailer and Folson finished fourth. Red River’s Mitchell Kuhlman and Danny Pierce took fifth.
West Fargo’s Brady Ballweber defeated Fargo North senior Andy Ficek 6-4, 4-6 and 6-1 for third place.
North’s Austen Strom topped Marcus Osman of Fargo Davies 6-2, 6-4 for fifth place.
