Weather Talk: This weekend may be peak for autumn colors

This weekend is likely the peak for fall colors in the area. Wooded areas such as those found in and around Maplewood State Park and Itasca State Park in Minnesota or Fort Ransom State Park in North Dakota are saturated with intense color. Plus, the weather is great.

But fall beauty does not end with the peak-color weekend. The color of the outside is still pretty in October and November. For one thing, if the big winds stay away, the leaves will stay on the trees for a longer time.

Even after the maples start to drop their leaves, there is still a lot of color to see. The brightest red and gold hues gradually give way to earthier shades.

Even the not-so-dramatic drive from Fargo to Grand Forks will reveal patches of ochre and purple among the yellow and brown, turning gradually more subtle, until eventually the only color is white.
