Style Profile: Color, shape inspire wardrobe
I had serious coat envy when I spotted Abby Swegarden in her mustard coat that fit her oh so well at Nichole’s Fine Pastry in downtown Fargo.
The Minnesota State University Moorhead student is also a pastry chef at Nichole’s. Swegarden swears by perfectly fitted clothes, sale racks and advice from her close friend Minda.
What are you wearing? My bag is Fossil, coat is Tulle, shirt by Anthropologie, jeans from Gap, Franco Sarto shoes and my jewelry is my grandma’s or handmade.
Where do you shop? Clothes Mentor – they carry really high-quality clothing. It’s rare I buy anything new. Anthropologie is also one of my favorite stops.
Have any recent trips influenced your style? I went to Ireland in May. There was a huge distinction from the Dublin airport and Chicago. In Chicago, I thought “Wow, we are back in America with the sweatpants.” Everybody was very well dressed in Ireland. Everybody had a very unique style.
Describe your fashion philosophy. Clothes should be comfortable and fit well. We need to move away from this idea that comfort overtakes everything. There’s a difference in how you feel about yourself when you dress well. It doesn’t have to be a vain thing. It can be about confidence and self-presentation.
What are your favorite brands and designers? I love Fossil bags, J. Crew and the designers that come through Anthropologie.
Do you get fashion inspiration from blogs or magazines? I love the Sartorialist blog. I also like looking through magazines and then finding looks I like at a more affordable price.
What are your fashion rules? Listen to Minda (Abby’s close friend). I knew very little nor did I care about fashion until I met Minda. It totally revamped my entire philosophy on fashion. Size doesn’t matter. Clothes just have to fit well and flatter your body.
What can’t you live without right now? Shirtdresses and my purse. The shirtdress is my fave thing right now. I have a billion of them. I wear them to work and outside of work. And stripes. I love stripes, anything in stripes.
What are your dream shoes? I want a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes.
