Grand Forks Red River captures 17 straight East Region boys tennis team title

GRAND FORKS - The facility may be new, but the result was the same.

Grand Forks Red River easily cruised to the North Dakota East Region boys tennis championship Thursday, beating Fargo North 5-0 in the finals at Choice Health and Fitness Center.

It marked the 17th straight East Region team title for Red River, going back to a 1995 loss to Fargo South. It was the first in the new Grand Forks indoor facility, which opened to the public Tuesday.

“I thought all the way through our lineup, the kids got better with every match,” Red River coach Greg LaDouceur said. “I thought early on, we had some struggles. But we were able to work through that. I was very pleased with the final outcome.”

Red River topped Valley City and Fargo Shanley by 5-0 scores in the quarterfinals and semifinals to reach the championship. Fargo North defeated Fargo South and West Fargo.

The only lineup spot that stayed the same through the three duals for Red River was No. 1 singles, where Greg Wischer dropped just three games during the day.

“We switched it up a little bit, trying different things and seeing what we might do next weekend (at the state tournament),” LaDouceur said. “We’re just trying to find the strongest lineup. I asked for advice from our leaders and our assistant coach and we thought we came up with a pretty good one this week.”

Red River will take the No. 1 seed from the East Region to the state tournament. The Roughriders are 11-0 on the season, dropping just one match.

Red River’s domination was expected.

Grand Forks Central’s run was not.

The Knights entered the weekend as the No. 6 seed in the tournament, but knocked off No. 3 West Fargo in the first round, then topped No. 4 Fargo Davies to qualify for the state tournament.

No. 2 singles player Kyle Folson was a standout for the Knights.

Folson went 3-0 on the day, winning a key match against West Fargo’s Keyan Farahmand 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the opening round and topping Fargo Davies’ Evan Kottsick in the state-qualifier.

One other underdog qualified for state in No. 5 Fargo Shanley. Like Central, the Deacons knocked off Fargo Davies and West Fargo to reach state.

The individual tournament begins today and ends Saturday.
