Letter: University Drive needs new lanes

Regarding Helmut Schmidt’s article, “Business owners oppose widening project,” which was published on Sept. 10:

I believe that they should add an extra turning lane to University Drive. Adding an extra turning lane would help many University Drive commuters, especially during rush-hour times when that extra lane would be a necessity to prevent line-ups. As a south Fargo commuter, I have experienced firsthand the backup of traffic during rush hour on South University Drive. There are more people using University Drive than people trying to park in the businesses’ parking lots.

There is no reason for the businesses to react. They will still have about 80 percent of the parking space left. It would also add additional safety for the drivers turning into the residential lanes and the drivers who are exiting off the interstate ramp.

I believe that adding an extra lane would be more than logical for the increased safety of the drivers and an adequate amount of space left for the businesses.
