Namedroppers (September 30, 2012)OUTSTANDING! Abby Dahl, daughter of Brian and Chanyce Dahl, Felton, Minn., and Morgan Okke, daughter of Matt and Melody Okke, Hawley, Minn., were recently honored at the county and state level for their pottery accomplishments. Dahl and Okke are home schooled and study pottery under the direction of Ren Fugelstad of Glyndon, Minn. The girls have entered their pottery in the open and 4-H classes at the Clay County Fair for the past three years, and won blue, purple and grand champion ribbons for their wheel-thrown and hand-built pieces. This summer their pottery demonstration on digging, processing and sculpting their own native clay earned them grand champion ribbons at the county fair and a trip to the Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul, where they earned blue ribbons.
MSUM NEWS: The following Fargo students have been awarded Upper Class Scholarships from Minnesota State University Moorhead: Robert Trefethren, son of Robert and Tammy Trefethren, $1,000; Hanna Erickson, daughter of Kelly and Jill Erickson, $500; Nicole Haaland, daughter of Sue and Charlie Petry, $1,000; and Brittany Jerstad, daughter of Faron and Collette Jerstad, $1,000. Upper Class Scholarships are available to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and the completion of at least 12 MSUM credits. The award recognizes outstanding academic achievement, leadership and contributions to campus and community organizations.
CONCORDIA NEWS: Karissa Anderson, daughter of Leon and Karen Anderson, Fargo, has been awarded a renewable grant and a theater scholarship by Concordia College.
NDSU NEWS: Nassir Abdi, son of Abdikadir Abdi and Fardowsa Mohamed, Fargo, has been selected to participate in the McNair Scholars Program at North Dakota State University. McNair Scholars are selected from NDSU undergraduates who meet the program criteria and show an interest in research. The goal of the program is to increase the attainment of PhD degrees by students from underrepresented segments of society. Participants will be involved in graduate-level research and other scholarly activities. Abdi will be supported by Birgit Pruess, associate professor of microbiology, and Marilyn Hedberg, librarian.

The White Coat Ceremony is an opportunity to welcome students into the profession of pharmacy and instill an attitude of professionalism, honesty and integrity. Students will take the oath of the pharmacist and receive a white coat symbolizing his or her duty to patients and colleagues as they enter the profession.

GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS: Sanford Medical Center has awarded scholarships to the following students:
E $3,800 Alyce Ovidia Grangaard Scholarships were awarded to Jessica Leininger, daughter of Curtis and Cynthia Leininger and graduate of Shanley High School, and Nicole Meyer, daughter of Kevin and Peggy Meyer and graduate of Fargo South High School. The scholarship is awarded to students in the NDSU nursing program who have a need for financial assistance.
E A $2,100 Albert Ronice Scholarship was awarded to Tonya Anderson of Fargo. Anderson is pursuing a nursing degree at Concordia College and is currently employed by Sanford Medical Center’s Family Birth Center.
Jolee French, daughter of Jay and Jody French, Horace, N.D., has been awarded a $750 scholarship from the Minot Icelandic Heritage Society, an affiliate of the Scandinavian Heritage Association. French is majoring in business administration at Concordia College.
RECENT GRADUATES: Anna Harman, Detroit Lakes, Minn., graduate from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, with a degree in journalism.
INTERNS AND CLERKS: Absolute Marketing Group, Fargo, has hired Sara Bakken and Bridget Anderson as client relations interns. Bakken earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and apparel and textiles at North Dakota State University. Anderson expects to graduate from NDSU this winter with a degree in public relations and advertising.
