Remodelers, new home construction showcase trends at Fall Home Show

FARGO – Gray accents are replacing the popular tan tones found inside home walls, while outside sitting rooms are one of the most popular additions for would-be remodelers.

Trends such as these will be featured Friday and Saturday at the 23rd annual Fall Home Show hosted by the Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead.

Minnesota author Joel Karsten, an expert in landscaping and outdoor design, is the featured speaker Saturday.

Karsten will offer three seminars focusing on outdoor rooms, latest trends in technology such as LED lighting, and composting.

He said designing outdoor rooms or spaces is a hot topic and one that many remodelers are looking at as a cheaper alternative to an addition.

While an addition may cost $150 to $250 per square foot, an outdoor room averages $50 per foot.

“It’s much less expensive, and a lot more people have the ability to do part of it themselves,” Karsten said.

Adding a fireplace or heater to the rooms makes a sunny space that can be used year-round, even in this area’s four-season climate.

New trends for inside the home include advanced flooring options that can stand the test of tracks made from shoes that have been out in the rain, wind, snow, heat and humidity.

Tim Liebl, sales manager for Accent Kitchen Bath Tile and Flooring stores, said one of the latest popular flooring options is a porcelain wood plank.

The porcelain tile looks like wood but has the sturdiness of porcelain, Liebl said.

“When we’re talking flooring, there are a bunch of new and good-looking ways to get the wood look on the floor without the wood going awry with the weather,” he said.

Liebl said older Fargo neighborhoods are leading the trends in remodeling right now.

Bryce Johnson, Home Builders Association executive vice president, said this year’s fall show will be a little different than years past when shows were held on Saturday and Sunday.

“Lots of people do other things on the weekend and we thought this might be more accommodating,” she said. “It’s nice, you’re got everything under one roof.”

The main speaker on Friday will be Cass County Extension Horticulture Agent Todd Weinmann, who will talk about winterizing gardens and offer tips on making gardens healthier.

More than 70 businesses are represented at the show.
