Letter: Dalrymple debate remark revealing

It is unfortunate that Jack Dalrymple is avoiding debates with Ryan Taylor. Debates are one of the best opportunities for a candidate to show what he or she is really like, if they stray from their well-rehearsed answers, that is.

It was just this type of slip-up that happened to Dalrymple at the broadcasters’ debate in Bismarck. When Taylor pushed him about our state’s wealth and how we’re failing our kids when they often end up with tens of thousands of dollars of debt after leaving college, Dalrymple simply shrugged his shoulders and said, “That’s too bad.”

It was an amazing mistake. It showed someone who either can’t relate to the struggles our children face when it comes to the ever-increasing cost of higher education, or someone who is so focused on protecting the benefits of wealthy oil billionaires that he can’t see the needs of the people of the state he governs.

I doubt Dalrymple will debate Taylor again. I wish he would. But I have a feeling he knows he can’t afford to say “that’s too bad” again.
