Former NDSU wrestling coach wins Veterans World Championships in Hungary

FARGO – Former North Dakota State assistant wrestling coach and 1977 Fargo South graduate Gregg Stensgard made his third attempt in the Veterans World Championships a gold medal trip.

The 53-year-old Stensgard won the Class D title for wrestlers ages 51-55 in Budapest, Hungary. A head high school coach in Vernal, Utah, he wrestled at 85 kg (187 pounds) in the Greco-Roman division.

He previously won a bronze medal in 2008 and a silver medal last year. Wrestlers from 48 countries competed in this year’s tournament.

“I felt like in both of those matches that there were subjective calls and I had to come back one more time to rectify the situation,” Stensgard said.

He’s just the third American to win a Greco title at the Veterans World Championships in the last 17 years. His training partner and coach was former NDSU and University of Minnesota wrestler Ryan Lewis.
