Spartans top Deacons in EDC volleyball match

FARGO – After suffering its first Eastern Dakota Conference volleyball loss six days ago, Fargo North used its serve to get back into the win column.

The Spartans posted a 25-20, 9-25, 25-10, 25-19 win against Fargo Shanley on Tuesday at the Spartandome.

North (11-2, 7-2 EDC) recorded 11 ace serves in the match. Service errors contributed to the Spartans’ 3-0 loss against Fargo Davies last Thursday, but their serves were sharp on Tuesday.

Senior middle hitter and NCAA Division I Nebraska commit Kira Larson led the way with seven aces.

“She was on,” Fargo North head coach Jerry Daily said of Larson. “When she is on, her serves are tough … aces were big part of this win for us.”

Larson’s top-spin serves kept the Deacons off balance most of the match. Serving was something Larson said the team addressed specifically during captain’s practice on Monday.

“It felt good to get this one, especially because we came off a real tough loss to Davies,” said Larson, who also had 16 kills and two blocks. “We just wanted to prove to ourselves that even though we did take that tough loss, that we are still one of the top teams out there.”

It was the first EDC loss for the Deacons.

“It is early,” Fargo Shanley head coach Curtis Johnson said. “We will see them again in our gym and I am confident in our girls. I thought we played very well at times, but again it is early. We are only going to get better.”

Alivia Fraase had 11 kills, two blocks and an ace to lead the Deacons (9-3, 6-1). Jessica Anderson added six kills for Shanley.

North cruised in the first set, but the Deacons recovered to even the match with a lop-sided win in the second set.

“We did some things well at times,” Daily said. “We had some good swings in the first set, but after that we didn’t get very many good swings. We got to do a better job of getting the ball to our hitters.”

Emma Bergeron had six kills and a block for North. Kelsie Schmiess and Courtney Johnson finished with 19 and 17 assists, respectively, for the Spartans, whose record at the Spartandome improves to 4-0.

SHANLEY (kills-blocks-aces): Anderson 6-1-0, Brenner 4-0-2 (19 digs), Fraase 11-2-1 (19 digs), Little 2-0-0, Mickelson 4-2-1, Freeberg 0-0-2 (22 assists)

NORTH: Larson 16-2-7, Bergeron 6-1-0, Thorstensen 4-0-2, Johnson 0-2-0 (17 assists), Preston 0-0-1 (20 digs), Schmiess 0-0-1.
