Forum editorial: The efficiency of evacuation wins praiseThe bomb scare evacuation of North Dakota State University last Friday was disturbing and disrupting. That was the downside. The up side, however, was an impressive display of emergency policies and procedures that should inspire some measure of confidence in the university’s management.
Within minutes after the scare came in, at about 9 a.m., the campus was mobilized to evacuate an estimated 20,000 students and personnel. We say “estimated” because there really was no way of knowing the exact number of people on the dynamic campus.
But whatever the number, it was large. The rapid and smooth evacuation was unprecedented in Fargo-Moorhead, according to law enforcement officers. That it was done with a minimum of confusion and congestion is a testament to the school and Fargo emergency personnel on the scene.
