Sanford Medical Center retains trauma ratingFARGO – Sanford Medical Center here has once again been designated as a trauma center by the American College of Surgeons.
The medical center is designated a Level II Trauma Center, the highest level in the state.
To receive verification, Sanford took part in an on-site review by a team of out-of-state surgeons.
The inspection included Sanford’s emergency center, operating room recovery room, critical care units, surgical unit, blood bank, lab and X-ray.
According to North Dakota trauma regulations, major trauma patients are to be taken to the trauma center with the highest level of designation. North Dakota has five levels of trauma center designation.
There are no Level I trauma centers in North Dakota or South Dakota, the highest level. The nearest is in Minneapolis.
A Level I trauma designation requires larger volumes of patients and additional medical specialties, such as microvascular surgery.
