Monte’s will be under new ownership

FARGO – A downtown bar and restaurant here will be under new ownership starting Oct. 1.

Dan Hurder and Christian D’Agostino are buying Monte’s restaurant at 220 Broadway from Doug and Kathy Scraper and Gene and Susan Finneman.

Hurder said he and D’Agostino will not change the core concepts of Monte’s, keeping the fine dining. There will be little to no changes in staffing, Hurder said.

He said he and D’Agostino do hope to put their own personal touch on the business, such as adding a lunch menu.

“We are planning to open for lunch no later than Nov. 1, which is something new for Monte’s,” Hurder said.

The two men worked together at the Hilton Garden Inn in south Fargo, where Hurder was general manager and D’Agostino was executive chef.

D’Agostino said after graduating from culinary school 20 years ago, he has been thinking of opening his own restaurant, and now seems to be the time.

“I’ve been working for many people before, and now I’ll be working for myself,” he said.

The sale of Monte’s will be final on Oct. 1. An Oct. 18 anniversary and new ownership celebration is planned.

The 52-seat restaurant will celebrate its 10-year anniversary.

A message left for Doug Scraper late Thursday afternoon was not returned.

Monte’s drew its name from Monte Jones, who was to manage the eatery but later had to withdraw from the arrangement. Jones still agreed to allow his name to be used.

Monte’s has repeatedly made The Forum’s “Best Of” lists in both restaurant and bar categories. In June 2011, Esquire magazine named Monte’s one of 169 best bars in America.

“Monte’s has been around for 10 years so something about it has worked,” Hurder said.
