Moorhead police release images of 'person of interest' in downtown sex assault

MOORHEAD – Police here released surveillance images Thursday with hopes that the public can help identify a person of interest in the physical and sexual assault of a woman on Sept. 6 in downtown Moorhead.

According to Lt. Tory Jacobson:

The incident occurred at 4:10 a.m. near Fifth Street and Main Avenue.

The woman was confronted by a stranger as she exited her parked car. The man violently struck the woman in the face multiple times prior to sexually assaulting her, she told police.

After the assault, the man reportedly chased her on foot when she fled the scene. The woman ran out into traffic on Main Avenue and stopped a vehicle for assistance.

The assault was not caught on surveillance video, Jacobson said. The images released by police Thursday are of a man who was in the area around the time of the attack. He also was seen on video running in the area, Jacobson said.

The images show the person of interest wearing an all-black outfit, smoking and wearing a neck chain.

Jacobson said the victim was hospitalized with serious facial injuries. She has since been released.

Anyone with information that may help in the investigation or identify the person of interest is asked to call the Red River Regional Dispatch Center at (701) 451-7660 and ask to speak with the on-duty Moorhead police supervisor.
