Letter: US economic mess did not start when this president took officeTo all who say they don’t like President Barack Obama, I would like to ask, “Why?”
This economic mess didn’t start four years ago. The majority of the debt was accumulated during the George W. Bush years, when the Republicans controlled the Senate for all eight years and the House for six of the eight years. Paul Ryan was one who voted for all that spending. In fact, Ryan and Rick Berg just voted to approve a $606 billion war spending bill. Is that their idea of cutting spending?
And it was Republican Dick Cheney who made the statement, “Deficits don’t matter.” I don’t recall any Republican coming forward to say, “Dick is wrong.”
Ronald Reagan’s first budget director, David Stockman, has put the condition of the country squarely on the Republicans. Immediately after Obama was elected, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell stated his goal for the next four years was to make sure Obama was a one-term president. The economy is a disaster because of the actions of the Republican Party and McConnell’s main goal is to make sure Obama is a one-term president. Seriously! Since that day, the Republicans in both the House and the Senate have worked very hard to obstruct everything Obama has tried to do.
The recipients of the Bush tax cuts are being paid to create jobs, which they’re not doing. Until we either cancel or change all of the trade agreements that have been signed, those jobs are not coming back. The “job creators” are getting the benefits of the Bush tax cuts plus the benefits from taking jobs overseas. Why in the world would they bring them back?
There are currently 14 trade agreements in place. Two were signed by Bill Clinton. Three were signed by Obama. And nine of them were signed by Bush.
I can’t understand why anyone would vote for a Republican for anything when it was the Republicans who got us into this mess in the first place. This is history. Look it up. And of course, the question will be asked, how long can you blame the previous administration? My answer: until the conditions they created no longer exist.
