South Fargo YMCA closed after water line leak reopens at 9 p.m.

FARGO – A leak discovered early this morning in a water line serving the YMCA of Cass and Clay Counties, Schlossman branch, at 4243 19th Ave. S., in Fargo, resulted in the facility shutting down until 9 p.m.

The leak caused flooding in the basement level of the building, which houses among other things the facility’s school-age child care program, a locker room and a skate park.

About half of the building’s lower level suffered flooding, said Paul Finstad, YMCA president.

Finstad said staff assisted families with reassigning children to other facilities for the day. The building’s child care program serves approximately 125 kids.

Finstad said the facility reopened its 24-hour access fitness center at 9 p.m. and he said the building was expected to again keep regular hours starting Thursday, including daycare programs.

He said for the time being some features of the basement level would remain closed, including a locker room, the skate park and the climbing wall.

The water line that leaked was an 8-inch pipe that supplies water for fire protection.

Finstad said it was unclear why the pipe broke.
