Rebels topple Spuds in volleyball

GLYNDON, Minn. – It’s been a couple of years since Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton’s volleyball team has been able to chalk up a win against Moorhead. On Tuesday in Glyndon, the Rebels experienced the feeling.

“This is a big win for us,” D-G-F head coach Tessa Tysver said as the Rebels celebrated the win.

D-G-F’s Mandy Mercil recorded seven kills, six aces and a match-high 30 assists as the Rebels defeated the Spuds 25-14, 20-25, 25-16, 25-18.

“I felt like our passing was really good and our talk was good,” Mercil said. “We got into a couple serving ruts and that’s kind of been our problem, but it was less than in the past. It felt good.”

The fourth set was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. Moorhead maintained a one-point lead throughout the set until D-G-F senior Sierra Senske tallied a kill down the line to give the serve back to the Rebels.

With Katie Highness on the service line, Senske smashed back-to-back kills to put them up 15-11. She finished with five kills and three blocks.

Mercil found a gap in the Spuds (3-2) defense to lay down a tricky drop shot and Hannah Young blocked Lexi Johnson’s shot to extend the lead to 20-11.

Alyssa LaFlamme picked up three kills during a five-point run by the Spuds, but Mercil’s set-winning kill would be the deciding factor as the Rebels would take the match.

“Mandy is a smart player,” Tysver said “She’s a gamer. She’s been starting for the last three years, and she’ll step in and find that open spot when we need a break.”

Moorhead showed signs of hope in Set 2 when Maddie Swanson came up with a huge block en route to an error by Young that left the Spuds with a 25-20 win.

“I just told them that they can’t be so timid,” Tysver said after the Set 2 loss. “They really have to be aggressive. The first game, we came out swinging and we were aggressive and finding the open spots, and the second game we just got too timid, so I told them to go back to how they played the first game.”

The Rebels (5-2) next match will be against Hawley on Thursday to contest for the No. 1 spot in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference. The Spuds will face Burnsville on Friday.
