Big-box store heading for Moorhead, but which one remains a mystery
Speculation has been rampant since Moorhead city officials confirmed that Menards had signed a land purchase agreement with a large retailer, but there have been few details, City Council Member Mark Hintermeyer said.
Hintermeyer is guessing it’s a Sam’s Club.
The deal apparently involves about 20 acres of land Menards owns just west of its store in the area of the 2800 block at 27th Avenue South.
Menards is staying quiet about who is buying the land. A call to Menards seeking comment went unanswered as of Tuesday evening.
What is known is that Menards will work with city staff to make sure the site in question is ready to support a big-box store, but the name of the mystery business and other details remain unknown, Hintermeyer said.
He said he bases his guess that it will be a Sam’s Club on information he was made privy to not that long ago that Sam’s Club had tried to buy a different parcel of land in the area but was unable to secure a deal.
Hintermeyer said he has also heard that a Kohl’s store may be in the picture.
Whatever the identity of the mystery store, the area around Menards is primed to “pop” with development, said Chuck Chadwick, executive director of the Moorhead Business Association.
“People will want to be around a traffic builder,” Chadwick said, referring to the fact that Sanford is building a medical center at the intersection of 34th Street South and 28th Avenue in Moorhead that is expected to open in 2014.
Hintermeyer said another factor encouraging development in the area is the rebuilding of Interstate 94 ramps near Menards that were eliminated with the arrival of a new interchange at 34th Street South and southeast Main in Moorhead. The project began on Monday.
