No. 1 Wyndmere-Lidgerwood edges HankinsonHANKINSON, N.D. – Top-ranked Wyndmere-Lidgerwood recorded a fourth-quarter touchdown to upend Hankinson 12-6 in North Dakota 9-man football Friday.
“Any time we play Hankinson, it’s usually a pretty close game,” Warbirds coach Scott Strenge said.
Previously unbeaten Hankinson (3-1) scored first with a Patrick Veit 30-yard touchdown catch. But that was all the scoring the Pirates could muster.
“We had opportunities to put points on the board,” Hankinson coach Jason Monilaws said, “but we made mistakes.”
After W-L tied the game in the third quarter, Luis Vasquez scored the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter on an 8-yard run with 10 minutes, 27 seconds left.
“Luis Vasquez is a stud,” Monilaws said. “He’s the reason they won the game. Period.”
Strenge said that he moved Vasquez from the running back and receiver positions to quarterback in the second quarter, hoping to spark the Warbirds (4-0). He described Vasquez as his team’s version of Tim Tebow.
“We moved him to quarterback to give us a change of pace,” Strenge said. “When we moved him, we were able to do more things.”
