Weather Talk: Summer 2012 ranks as 4th-warmest on record

The summer of 2012 finished as the fourth-warmest on record. The only three summers with a higher average were in 1988, 1936 and 1933, in that order.

The average temperature for June, July and August was 71.8 degrees, which is 3 degrees above the current 30-year average of 68.8 degrees. As a comparison, the cool summer of 2009 finished with an average temperature of 65.3 degrees.

Not including three hot days in May, the three months of summer recorded 20 days with a high at or above 90 degrees, the 12th-highest total since 1881. That was far short of the 35 recorded in 1936 or the 34 recorded in 1988. Yet, this past summer was consistently in the 80s more frequently than other years. Rainfall ended at 6.30 inches, which made the period from June 1 through Aug. 31 the 25th-driest such period on record.
