Forum editorial: First lady hits a home run

One need not be a fan of the Obama administration to recognize a great speech. First lady Michelle Obama’s address Tuesday night to the Democratic National Convention merits the descriptor. It was nearly perfect in tone, content and presentation. It was appropriately subtle in its political message and powerful in its personal message.

It’s not surprising the first lady’s popularity rating is above 70 percent, some 20 points higher than President Barack Obama. Michelle Obama is as intelligent, poised and successful a first lady as the White House has ever seen. While she’s demonstrated as much in the past four years, she made her mark as a highly competent professional woman before the national spotlight.

When she spoke about her children and husband, it was not as the first family but as her family. Her words resonated. When she told the story of her modest start in life in a working-class family, she revealed the American dream most Americans understand.

A great speech. An impressive first lady. Surely, she is the president’s greatest asset.
