Colonials to start Matt Layman at quarterback against the Bison

Robert Morris University quarterbacks Matt Layman and Jeff Sinclair were in a battle for the starting position – until this week. Head coach Joe Walton said Sinclair will be suspended for the first two games including Saturday’s game at North Dakota State.

Sinclair started against NDSU two years ago in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision first round playoff game, won 43-17 by the Bison. Layman, a sophomore, completed 21 of 31 passes for 265 yards last season.

“We have rules,” Walton said. “If you don’t follow the rules, you pay the price and I don’t care who you are. It’s one of those things; Jeff understands and he’s handling it pretty well. He’ll be ready for our third game.”

TheColonialCorner.com, an online publication that follows RMU, reported Sinclair was charged with disorderly conduct last winter. The charge was dismissed in July. It’s uncertain if that was the reason for the disciplinary action.

“Jeff had a real good sophomore season, but he fell off a bit last year,” Walton said. “Matt has provided a good challenge and I’m comfortable starting Matt.”
