Cable One, Midco yet to reach deal for UND coverageGRAND FORKS – University of North Dakota fans living in Fargo might be left in the dark when it comes to television coverage of their team’s games.
On Tuesday, the UND athletic department announced the television coverage for the football team’s season opener Thursday night against South Dakota School of Mines.
There was a noticeable absence from the list of cable providers that have opted to pick up Midco Sports Network’s coverage.
Cable One, the lone cable provider in Fargo, has yet to agree to a deal with Midco Sports Net for the upcoming season.
“We have made every attempt to make this year’s deal as similar to prior years as possible … price per game available and everything,” said Mark Powell, Midcontinent Communication’s vice president of business solutions.
Powell said nearly all of last season’s cable providers chose to carry this year’s Midco coverage. He said two previous providers, excluding Cable One, opted to decline the deal.
Attempts to reach Cable One general manager Scott Geston on Tuesday were not successful.
Midcontinent is provided to cable subscribers in West Fargo and Moorhead, but not in Fargo.
Cable One picked up UND’s full television schedule of 40 live events last year – events that were produced through the Fighting Sioux Sports Network, a partnership that included WDAZ-TV in Grand Forks and UND.
Midcontinent announced in June it had acquired the broadcasting rights of UND athletics for $1 million over a five-year span.
Per the 2012-13 UND and Midco contract, Midco will broadcast up to 45 live UND games, plus up to 40 weekly special shows. Those 45 games will include all home men’s hockey games, five home football games, five home men’s and women’s basketball games, four home women’s hockey games and three home volleyball matches.
