Letter: Keep Jesus off of socialist listRegarding Los Angeles Times cartoonist David Horsey’s cartoon from Aug. 24:
The cartoon was thought-provoking for me being I’m a Christian and wondering if Jesus’ statement “take all that you have and give it to the poor” applies to our government system here in the United States. My simple understanding of this statement is Jesus was talking with one individual on a personal spiritual level, not on a political level.
To apply this statement to our government system to force people to give up their wealth to give to the poor was not Jesus’ intent. The person Jesus talked with had freedom to choose what to do with his wealth. Jesus works with us on a personal level himself, where we have freedom to choose and not through government compelling us. Let’s keep it that way.
Now, if you like to have a socialist system, you may mention the names Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Castro, Chavez, but let’s keep the name of Jesus out of it.
