Area Class 4A football previewDetroit Lakes
Coach: Flint Motschenbacher (15th year)
2011 record: 7-3
Players to watch: Michael Herzog, Jr., QB; Stephen Erb, Sr., WR/CB; Logan Moe, Sr., OL; Josh Weber, Jr., OL/DL.
Coach’s comments: “We told the kids we lose good players every year and that just creates opportunities for them,” Motschenbacher said of the Lakers’ 2011 senior class that included Joe Mollberg, who is playing Division I football at the University of North Dakota. “We might not have the headline players this fall, but we got a lot of kids looking the step up. Michael (Herzog) filled in for Joe four games at quarterback last year and we won all four of those games. We will throw when we have to throw, but we will continue to run the triple-option running offense.”
Schedule: Aug. 30–at Hermantown, 7 p.m.; Sept. 7–Pequot Lakes, 7 p.m.; Sept. 14–at Thief River Falls, 7 p.m.; Sept. 21–at Staples-Motley, 7 p.m.; Sept. 28–East Grand Forks, 7 p.m.; Oct. 5–Park Rapids, 7 p.m.; Oct. 12–at Perham, 7 p.m.; Oct. 17–at Crookston, 7 p.m.
Coach: Richard Risbrudt (35th year)
2011 record: 5-5
Players to watch: Brady Hansen, Sr., DB; Drew Rienertson, Sr., WR/CB; Reece Johnson, Sr., WR; Walker Heinen, Sr., LB; Casey Ward, Sr., OL/DB; Bradie Wahlgren, Sr., WR/DB; Alex Anderson, Sr., OL; Jason Burns, Sr., DE.
Coach’s comments: “We have a solid senior class,” Risbrudt said. “We have 32 players on the team that have been in the weight room over 125 times in the offseason, which is more than players have put in from past seasons. We have two returning linemen Alex Anderson, a two-year starter at left tackle and Casey Ward, a three-year starter at right guard. We have a large number of lineman that can play at a high level, which should be a big strength for us this season.”
