Minnesota State Fair ride malfunctions again

MINNEAPOLIS — A ride at the Minnesota State Fair malfunctioned again, a day after stranding 24 people about 100 feet off the ground for 40 minutes.

Fair spokeswoman Lara Hughes tells the Star Tribune (http://bit.ly/P8DQIN ) the Stratosphere unexpectedly stopped Friday with people aboard, again for about 40 minutes. She had no other details.

The ride's owner says the Stratosphere had a similar problem at the Wisconsin State Fair earlier this month.

Tom McDonagh, of Michigan-based McDonagh Amusement, says he's confident the ride will be working again soon.

The Stratosphere looks like a tall tower, with swings hanging from branch-like extensions. The seats go up and the tower spins.

Another fair spokeswoman, Brienna Schuette, says Thursday's malfunction happened after a safety lock worked incorrectly as the tower descended, triggering the safety mechanism to stop the ride.
