Council to discuss urban chickensMOORHEAD – City leaders here will be discussing bringing chickens into city limits at the next City Council meeting Monday.
Some residents say they want to have laying hens in the city and will address the council at the meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall at 500 Center Ave.
Current Moorhead city code classifies all chickens as livestock and forbids them within the city.
Fargo has allowed raising chickens in the city since 1952. Casselton, N.D., Fergus Falls, Minn., St. Paul and Minneapolis all allow some hens within city limits. All the cities ban the raising of roosters, due to the morning crowing.
A pro-chicken push in 2010 failed in West Fargo, where raising the feathered fowl remains illegal.
