Escorted off practice field, MSU Mankato football coach booked in child porn case

EAGLE LAKE, Minn. — The head football coach at Minnesota State, Mankato, is in custody on charges related to child pornography.

Todd Hoffner was booked into the Blue Earth County Jail on Tuesday afternoon.

He has not been formally charged, and it was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney. His home phone number is disconnected.

The Mankato Free Press reports (http://bit.ly/MJTKYK ) authorities were at Hoffner's Eagle Lake home Tuesday. Eagle Lake Police Chief Phil Wills told the newspaper he couldn't comment.

Messages left for sheriff's officials and prosecutors were not immediately returned to The Associated Press.

Hoffner was escorted off the football practice field Friday. Dan Benson, a spokesman at Minnesota State, Mankato, tells the AP Hoffner is on leave. He says the university is working on a statement.

Hoffner was named the 2009 NSIC coach of the year.

Hoffner graduated from Valley City (N.D.) State in 1989 where he played football and ran track, according to his biography on the Mankato website. He earned a master’s degree from North Dakota in 1991.

The native of Esmond, N.D., is married and has three children.
