Coach’s comments: “It is going to be an interesting year in that we lost our first ever senior class a year ago,” Christianson said. “It will be our first time rebuilding after losing players and several guys will have to step up into leadership roles for us … Overall, the team’s chemistry is strong. The players have a strong work ethic and we are determined to play like the way we finished out last season making the state tournament.”

Fargo North

Coach: Jon Melendez-Soloaga (fourth year)

Coach’s comments: “We were in a rebuilding season last fall, but we have a really good mix of kids this year,” Melendez-Soloaga said. “I do see us competing in the Eastern Dakota Conference this year and we hope to improve from last year … We have a lot of players with varsity experience now and all the players know what is expected of them.”

Fargo Shanley

Coach: Michael Breker (sixth year)

Coach’s comments: “We lost Cam Hager, who was the senior athlete of the year last season,” Breker said. “Cam was a big goal scorer for us, but we have a couple kids looking to fill that spot … We have a healthy group of seniors this fall. We return all our starting defenders, so that will allow us to push the offensive game a little more at the beginning of the season.”

Fargo South

Coach: Dean Hashbarger (11th year)

2011 record: 6-9-2

Who’s gone: Matt Hockert, Shane McCullough.

Coach’s comments: “We are excited about what we have this year,” Hashbarger said of the Bruins, who finished third in the EDC last season and qualified for state. “We played really well at the end of last season and the progress has been there. Our team has been focused on improving from last year and has a lot of self-motivation … We qualified for state last year after not making it the year before, which really reinvigorated our players … We seem to be hungry to make state again this fall.”

West Fargo

Coach: Doug Millar (14th year)

2011 record: 12-8-0

Who’s gone: Brandon Beyer, Paul Lanctot, Sam Saville, Ryder Neva, Matt Prochniak.

Coach’s comments: “We had our scrimmages last weekend, which gave us a chance to see where we are at,” said Millar whose Packers finished 10-2 in the Eastern Dakota Conference a year ago. “We have a pretty good idea of what we want to do this year … We have been battling a couple injuries with our upperclassmen early on, but we have a large sophomore class and we may dip into that at the beginning of the season. It will be a matter of how well our older and younger players mesh, if they mesh well we will be fine.”

Moorhead

Coach: Lance Hansen (7th year)

2011 record: 14-3-1

Who’s gone: Isaac Borgen, Markus Dewey, Bradley Grandberg, Tyler Guertin, Nate Johnson, Weston Johnson, Terry Leabo, Nick Peterson, Cody Rahman, Simon Selberg, My Vo, Ali Alomar.

Coach’s comments: “We have three three-year starters coming back this year,” Hansen said of Leier, Roach and Hartjen. “They are hard workers and will provide the team with leadership … Things are falling into place in regards to our starters. Overall, our team is pretty solid and doesn’t have many weaknesses. We will be ready for another good run and hopefully another double-digit win season.”

GIRLS

Moorhead

Coach: Nicole Wiesner (4th year)

2011 record: 11-5-2

Who’s gone: Morgan Holm, Katie Rosenfeldt, Morgan Nyquist, Cate Cavalier, Amber Johnson, Emily Schroeder.

Coach’s comments: “We have a lot of offense returning,” Wiesner said. “Every girl on the team had at least one varsity point last year so we should be strong offensively … The defense is going to be young, but we are going to have speed there this year. We return seven seniors who all have at least two years of varsity experience and we will be relying on their leadership.”
