Dayton, lawmakers to talk flood relief on Friday

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Gov. Mark Dayton meets Friday with Republican and Democratic legislative leaders to negotiate an agreement on a special session focused on flood relief.

The Democratic governor said Wednesday that he won't call the special session until the leaders agree in writing to a limited agenda for a short special session, likely one day.

The governor has sole power to call a special session but can't limit what the Legislature does or when it adjourns once the special session starts.

Dayton's administration has proposed a $190 million state relief package, prompting key Republican lawmakers to complain of “sticker shock” last week.

Lawmakers on a disaster relief panel will delve into details of the proposal at a Capitol hearing on Thursday.
