Sheriff says alcohol doesn't appear to be factor in accident that killed Moorhead high student

MOORHEAD - Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in a one-vehicle accident Thursday that killed a Moorhead High School student, officials say.

In a news release Tuesday, Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist said all three of the occupants of the car – Kullen Carney and Brendan Daly, both 16, and 17-year-old Austin Wagar – were wearing their seat belts.

Wagar died Friday at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo as a result of his injuries. Carney – who was identified as the driver – and Daly both have been released from the hospital.

The accident remains under investigation, Bergquist said.

The crash was reported around 6:40 p.m. Thursday. The three boys were in a white Buick Century on 80th Avenue when it fishtailed, went into the ditch and flipped. The car landed on its roof at 50th Street and started on fire.

The Minnesota State Patrol is reconstructing the accident, which could take months, the sheriff’s office stated.
