ND man finishes second at AARP National Spelling BeeNORTHWOOD, N.D. — Northwood teacher Larry Grossman fell just short in his bid to win a second title in the AARP National Spelling Bee.
The 60-year-old Grossman finished second in the weekend event in Cheyenne, Wyo. He lost to 67-year-old Micheal Petrina Jr., of Arlington, Va. Petrina also won the bee in 2009, the year after Grossman won.
Forty-eight spellers from about two dozen states signed up for the 16th annual senior bee, which is open to anyone age 50 or older. Petrina won $1,000 and Grossman $800.
