Minn. panel threatens to block union contractsST. PAUL — Republican lawmakers led by congressional candidate Mike Parry are threatening to prevent new state employee union contracts from going into effect.
Parry convened a Capitol hearing Thursday where he and other lawmakers grilled state officials about the contracts covering 27,500 state workers.
The room was packed with union workers whose laugher drew threats from Parry to clear the room. At one point, he called a recess after a Democratic lawmaker said it was a blessing that Parry had only a few legislative meetings left.
Parry is running in Tuesday's GOP primary in southern Minnesota's 1st District. He is facing backlash after saying that Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton popped pills in a meeting.
The state senator from Waseca says employee relations subcommittee will meet Aug. 23 to vote on the contracts.
