51-year-old man seriously hurt in assault behind downtown Fargo bar
At about 3:15 a.m., a manager at Dempsey’s Public House at 226 Broadway heard a noise behind the bar, looked outside and saw what appeared to be a man being assaulted in the alley, Sgt. Jim Kringlie said.
The manager yelled at the people who were near the victim and called police, who had officers in the area and responded quickly, he said.
The injured man was found face-down and unconscious and had lost a lot of blood from a head wound. Officers initially thought he wasn’t breathing and were going to perform CPR, but as they prepared to use an automated external defibrillator, the man gasped and appeared to breathe on his own, Kringlie said.
The man was taken to the Sanford Medical Center emergency room, and he had not regained consciousness while police were there, Kringlie said.
Three people found walking away from the scene when officers arrived were detained. Cody Egobundu Enwesi was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and taken to the Cass County Jail, and the other two people, who police believe likely witnessed the incident, were transported to detox, Kringlie said.
Kringlie said Enwesi admitted to striking the victim, “but he claims he was struck first by the victim. Of course, the victim hasn’t given his side.”
Police don’t believe a weapon was used in the assault, he said.
